UK HOME UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Underfloor Heating: Practical Help for UK Homeowners

A floor that does not feel hot is not necessarily broken. Start with what the room is doing, what the controls are requesting and which checks an owner can carry out safely.

Why is my underfloor heating not getting warm?

First distinguish a cool-feeling floor from a room that stays below its target temperature. Check the actual air temperature, the thermostat's current mode and when comfort was scheduled. A heating icon may only show a request, not that hot water is flowing. Follow the safe first checks.

What settings should I use?

No single time or temperature setting suits every home. A heavy screed, lightweight floor, heat pump and electric bathroom mat can respond very differently. Learn your exact controller's programme and use comparable observations before changing one permitted user setting. Compare scheduling approaches.

Why is just one room cold?

A zone is not necessarily a room, and a manifold loop is not necessarily a zone. Compare that room's air-temperature shortfall, mode, floor finish and heat loss with neighbouring rooms. Do not alter loop meters or balancing valves as a test. See the room-by-room investigation guide.

Can I work out running costs from my bill?

You can check billed kWh, unit rates and standing charges, but a combined boiler or heat-pump bill usually cannot isolate the energy used by an underfloor circuit. Read the UK billing guide.
