The best gateway location balances cellular reception into the gateway with Wi-Fi coverage out to your devices. A window may improve the first link but leave the gateway far from the rooms that need Wi-Fi. Test several safe locations and score the complete result.

Safety and provider instructions come first

Use only supported orientations, power supplies, mounting methods, and locations. Keep the gateway dry, stable, and ventilated. Do not place it where it can fall, overheat, obstruct an exit, strain a cable, or expose someone to a ladder or electrical hazard. Do not open or modify it. Provider and manufacturer instructions override generic placement advice.

Choose candidate locations

Start with three or four practical spots: perhaps near different exterior walls or windows and, if safe, on different levels. Favor open locations above floor level and away from dense clutter. Avoid assuming that the nearest-looking tower serves the gateway; provider radio configuration is not always visible or obvious.

Building materials can affect radio signals. Metal coatings, masonry, concrete, foil insulation, and appliances may matter, but every building differs. Treat material as a reason to compare—not a guaranteed diagnosis.

Run a controlled placement test

  1. Record the original location and mark cables so you can restore it.
  2. Move the gateway while powered off if its instructions require that.
  3. Place it securely with vents unobstructed and use the approved power adapter.
  4. Allow enough time for a complete cellular reconnection.
  5. Record the provider-reported signal metrics, connection type, stability, speed, and latency.
  6. Test Wi-Fi in the rooms where it matters, not only beside the gateway.
  7. Repeat the same test at each candidate location and at comparable times.
  8. Leave the leading location in place for a longer stability check before declaring it the winner.

A simple scorecard can rate cellular stability, useful speed, latency, whole-home Wi-Fi reach, access to safe power, and ventilation. Do not overvalue a tiny change in one signal number if the overall connection becomes less stable.

Understand the tradeoff

If moving the gateway improves Ethernet performance but weakens Wi-Fi in distant rooms, you have learned that placement helped the incoming cellular link and created or revealed a separate distribution issue. Ethernet cabling or a properly planned access point or mesh system might then be relevant. Confirm compatibility and placement requirements before purchasing.

If every safe location performs poorly even on Ethernet, more Wi-Fi equipment is unlikely to help. Document the comparisons for provider support. Likewise, a window mount, external antenna, or outdoor enclosure should never be improvised; use only explicitly supported equipment and installation methods.

Keep placement evidence

Photograph or describe each spot, note orientation, record metrics from the official gateway interface, and state the time of each test. Weather and provider conditions can vary, so one fast result should not outweigh stable performance over multiple days.
